Lamoureux Twins earn trading card treatment from legendary Topps Company

Leading into the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, the Topps trading card company is immortalizing Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux on cardboard. With a card-set featuring prominent American male and female athletes going for the gold in Sochi, the Lamoureux twins are part of the group of athletes getting the trading card treatment.

A 192-card set, other remarkable athletic women include Gretchen Bleiler, Lolo Jones, Hannah Teter and Lindsey Vonn. For the Lamoureux twins to be considered in the same stratosphere as such accomplished athletes are testament to their talent.  Having joined a moribund North Dakota hockey program and turning it into a nationally-ranked power that attracted quality recruits from around the world, it may prove to be their greatest legacy in hockey.

Considering that Topps has not manufactured cards featuring hockey players in a decade, it is a welcome sight for Topps collectors to see hockey players back on cardboard. Joining the Lamoureux twins in the card set as the only three women’s hockey players to have their own card is Hilary Knight.

No hockey fan would dispute that they are the finest pair of sisters playing hockey in the world. Despite a disappointing bronze medal at the 2013 Four Nations Cup, the Lamoureux twins have had remarkable success against Canada.

From dominating the Under-22 Canadian team in summer 2012 to beating Canada on their own home ice in the gold-medal game at the 2013 IIHF Women’s Worlds (of note, it was the first time that Canada lost the IIHF gold-medal game on home ice), they may prove to be double trouble in Sochi.

The opportunity to be on cardboard is part of a rare milestone for women’s sports. For collectors, very few products feature female athletes. While Topps’ Allen and Ginter sets plus Upper Deck’s Goodwin Champions have started to reverse that trend, the Sochi set is a perfect way to capture the spirit of the games while showing support for the amazing female athletes who rarely get a chance in the spotlight.
